Pellet grills don’t need a heated garage, but leaving one outside all winter with pellets still in the hopper is how owners end up chiseling out a solid block of sawdust glue every spring. A half hour of prep in late fall saves a much bigger cleanup later.
Empty the hopper before the first hard freeze
Pellets absorb ambient moisture even inside a “sealed” hopper, and repeated freeze-thaw cycles turn that moisture into swelling that jams the auger. Run the grill down to empty rather than scooping pellets out cold, then vacuum out the fines that collect at the bottom.
Store whatever pellets you pull out in a truly airtight container, not the paper bag they came in. Paper bags are fine on a dry shelf for a few weeks; they are not fine for a Calgary winter in a shed.

Clean the auger and fire pot so pellets don’t turn to paste
Vacuum the fire pot and auger tube while everything is dry. Any leftover ash mixed with residual moisture forms a paste that hardens over winter and can seize the auger motor on your first spring startup. This takes ten minutes and prevents a repair call.
Cover it right, or don’t bother covering it at all
A loose tarp traps condensation against the metal worse than no cover at all, which is the opposite of what most owners expect. A properly fitted, breathable cover sheds rain and snow while still letting trapped moisture escape instead of sweating on the finish overnight.

Protect the controller and probes from moisture cycles
The digital controller is the part most likely to fail from winter neglect, not the steel body. If your model allows it, remove the controller and store it indoors. If it doesn’t detach, at minimum make sure the cover fully seals around that section and check it after any heavy snowfall.
Grills stored bone dry with an empty hopper start reliably in spring. Grills left with damp pellets and a loose cover usually need an auger cleared or a controller replaced before the first cook of the season — the ten minutes now is cheaper than either repair.
