- Empty hopper or pellet jam — Grill fires briefly then dies, or never fires at all.
- Wet or dusty pellets — Weak flame, temperature swings, excessive white smoke.
- Failed igniter — Auger runs but no ignition, no orange glow when starting.
- Dirty temperature probe — Reported temp does not match actual temp (verify with second thermometer).
- Blocked airflow — Excessive smoke, cannot reach set temperature, sooty firepot.
Check 1: Fuel (hopper and pellets)
Confirm hopper has enough pellets and they are dry. Pellets absorb moisture from the air within 24-72 hours if left in an open hopper – wet pellets are the #1 cause of heating problems.
- Empty the hopper completely.
- Inspect pellets – they should be firm, uniform, and smell fresh. Discard any that crumble.
- Refill with fresh pellets from a sealed bag.
- Try starting again.

Wet pellets swell and jam the auger. If pellets in the hopper are dry but the grill still will not heat, the auger tube itself may have a wet-pellet clog.

The RTD (resistance temperature detector) probe tells the grill what temperature it is at. If dirty or failed, the grill under- or over-fuels the fire.
