New cast iron or steel grates arrive with a manufacturing coating that needs to be burned off and replaced with a proper seasoning layer, and skipping that step is the single most common reason a brand-new grate rusts within a month.
Wash off the shipping coating first
Most new grates ship with a light oil or wax coating meant to prevent rust in transit, not to cook on. Wash it with hot water and mild dish soap, dry it completely, and don’t use steel wool at this stage — you’re removing shipping residue, not stripping metal.
Apply oil in a thin layer, then bake it in
A thick coat of oil doesn’t season faster, it just gets sticky and gummy. Use a high smoke-point oil — grapeseed, canola, or a dedicated cast iron spray — wiped on thin enough that the grate looks almost dry, then run the grill at 400-450°F for 30-45 minutes with the lid closed.

Repeat two or three times before your real first cook
One seasoning pass gives you a thin, uneven layer. Two or three passes build a smoother, more consistent non-stick surface and noticeably better rust resistance through the first season of regular use — the extra hour up front is worth it.
A scraper keeps the seasoning intact after every cook
Once seasoned, avoid metal wire brushes that gouge the surface and expose bare metal underneath. A flat scraper or grate-specific tool clears off cooked-on residue without stripping the layer you just built.

If you’re upgrading grates entirely, buy cast iron and season it the same way
Cast iron holds heat more evenly than thin stainless rods and takes a better sear once properly seasoned, though it does need this same upkeep every few months to stay rust-free — stainless needs less maintenance but never sears quite as well.
