- Surface rust (light orange coating) — Easily scraped off with a brush. Grate structure is fine.
- Deep rust (flaking or pitted) — Rust chunks visible; some grate material lost. Needs aggressive cleaning.
- Fully corroded through — Grate is brittle, breaks under pressure. Replacement required.
- Constant re-rusting — Grates rust again within days of cleaning. Storage/cover issue.
Fix 1: Clean surface rust
Light rust comes off with a wire brush and heat. This is the most common case.
- Heat the grill on high for 15 minutes with grates inside.
- Use a bristle-free grill brush to scrape rust off.
- Wipe with a damp cloth.

Fix 2: Remove deep rust
For heavier rust, remove grates and treat off the grill.
- Remove grates from the grill.
- Soak in a mix of white vinegar and water (50/50) for 1 hour.
- Scrub with a wire brush or steel wool.
- Rinse thoroughly with water.
- Dry completely (this is critical).
- Re-season with high-smoke-point oil.
